Finland is mainly a flat country , with the highest Halti at 1,324 metres above sea level. About seventy five percent of the land is coveredĀ  by coniferous forests and there is very little arable land for cultivation of crops. Granite is the most common type of rock and moraine the most widely used soil.

There are about 180,000 lakes in Finland and a similar number of islands. Some of the poorly drained areas are occupied by peat bogs. The area of Finland has been growing by about 7 square kilometers every year.

The forests in Finland can be classified into 3 types:
Taiga region
Mixed forests
Temperate forests with oak, elm, hazel and mapleĀ  in the South.

Finland is the eighth largest country in terms of area in Europe, but one of the most sparsely populated with a total population of less than 6 million. The country is located in Northern Europe and is bordered by Sweden on the west, Russia on the East, Norway on the North and the Baltic sea on the south.

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and the largest city. Tampere, Turku, and Oulu are the other major cities in Finland. The country is highly industrialised, with services and manufacturing forming a major part of the countries GDP. The per capita income is more than $46,000 and is one of the highest in the world. Many high tech manufacturers like Nokia are based in Finland.

Finnish the official language and is widely spoken. Swedish is also used by a small section of the population.
